After a wonderfully relaxing weekend traveling throughout forests and mountains, hiking trails, and playing in a river I’m back to writing BlogHer’s NaBloPoMo. This activity is just as exciting, though in a much different way.

Today, I’m talking about the joy of a Granny Smith Apple! That’s right, I love a bright green Granny Smith Apple. In doing a quick search about these apples, I also learned they have really good health benefits (more on this in a moment).

I love the crisp, cool, and tart flavor of a Granny Smith Apple. I love to hear how it crunches when I bite into it, then a quick flick of the tongue to catch the escaping juice before it runs down my hand. I love how the Granny Smith helps to quench my thirst, as well as the right amount of sweetness not to overwhelm the senses, but not to leave room for wondering either.

I find Granny Smith’s are not on the extreme side of anything, which I think likens itself to me – or me to it, I suppose. Just like a Granny Smith, I’m not too much on any side of any thing, yet I’m not quite in the middle either. I can be cool and crisp or I can be quite tart. I can be bright and shiny or I can float into the background.

Just as Granny Smith apples can retain their look and taste over time, I do. Granny Smith’s can be used in a variety of ways and apparently are often used in cooking/baking. Apparently, Granny Smith Apples can also be stored well for as long as a year! Well, if you knew me or were around me for any length of time you might know that I am likely to have enhanced in a year’s time. You also might notice that I can be part of a variety of things, without losing my crisp, slightly tart ways or the juiciness for life. In other words, I hold my flavors.

I love the opportunities that life has to offer. I love the freshness of life and the different flavors that are presented throughout time. Just like when I bite into a Granny Smith, when I take something in life on, there’s always a bit of it dripping on the sides, needing to be caught before getting lost in the shuffle.

And those health benefits I mentioned. Granny Smith Apples are

“high in antioxidant activity, and they boast the highest concentration of phenols amongst the apple breeds.[12] Some sources recommend Granny Smiths (among other apples) as a particularly efficient source of antioxidants, particularly the flavonoids cyanidin and epicatechin, especially if eaten with the skin intact.[13] Granny Smiths are also naturally low in calories and high in dietary fiber and potassium, making them commonly recommended as a component of healthy and weight-loss diets.”

or so says Wikipedia.

It’s no wonder I love these apples!!

What’s your favorite apple? Which apple do you liken to yourself?
