Thanks for stopping by to check out my progress at the gym. Unfortunately, I have nothing all that new to report. I only went to the gym once this entire week. As it goes, life got in the way. Nothing bad or difficult happened, it is more of a timing issue. We started to look for a place to move into. Well, once this week, I feel asleep unexpectedly as I nursed Baby Boy for a nap. I slept for 3 hours that evening! Yeah, it was wild when I woke up seeing that it was nearly time for bed anyway. Other than that, the searching for a new dwelling has been our focus and in order to use the daylight hours left after dinner, I didn’t go to the gym. I’m alright with making this choice and have spent no time berating myself this week. If anything, that is what I’m proud of.
On a different, though related, note, we started a different supplement plan this week. I am having 1-2 protein, fiber, and essential fatty acids shake each day. We were able to find a protein powder that we both felt to be safe and healthy. There is no soy, no acesulfame potassium (ace K), and no sucralose or other unhealthy sugars.
Found at the Vitamin Shoppe, with 18g of protein and 3g of fiber, plus some calcium, vitamin D, and B vitamins, as well as great amino acids, per 28g serving, Designer Whey is the right choice for us! They use an all natural whey formula and it’s even certified gluten-free. They even use stevia leaf extract as their sweetener. How cool is that!?
Honestly, the French Vanilla flavor tastes great! I have been very particular about the taste of protein powders for all of my working out years and usually only buy a flavored one in order to curb the “protein powder” aftertaste. Designer Whey doesn’t have that aftertaste. I haven’t used water in making my shakes, instead using a creamed milk, kefir, or yogurt but there’s been no need for me to add frozen fruit in order to actually ingest it. I have added frozen fruit to most of my shakes, simply because I like the taste of fruit, but I’ve also enjoyed a shake without and it’s still been good!
Enough about the protein powder. We are also trying to increase my ingestion of essential fatty acids, omega 3 & 6. I am allergic to fish, so taking a fish supplement is something I’m not willing to try. I was previously taking a flaxseed oil and/or primrose supplement. Now I’m putting ground chia seed in my shakes and sprinkling in some of our foods. There are more EFAs in each serving as compared to the flaxseed oil capsule, at 2.5g per tablespoon. We thought this might be a better, more whole, option, plus it has more EFAs. We also bought some hemp seed that I sometimes use along with or in place of chia seed for my shakes. I’ve also thrown a bit of it into food once this week.
It seems to be working out just fine, though having done this for about a week. See, EFAs can help with eczema and I’ve had an ongoing outbreak for at least 8 months now. It’s better than it was for quite a few months, but it’s still somewhat of an issue. I’m thinking that because we’re breastfeeding, I’m being ‘stripped’ of the EFA, protein, and prostoglandins necessary to help curb outbreaks. Prior to and during pregnancy, I hadn’t had a real outbreak in a few years, so this seems to be the best explanation.
The last thing we’ve done more of, is taking a liquid mineral supplement. We found Natural Vitality to be excellent! They have a concentrated plant-sourced and organic mineral supplement we’ve chosen. It’s wonderful because I have taken it straight as it is, without the use of something wash it down or rinse my mouth out afterwards. This product is vegan, gluten-free, and GMO free and has no sugars, artificial colors, or flavor. They only use organic stevia and organic apple for flavor, which is what makes it so easily ingest-able. Natural Vitality includes over 70 trace minerals, at 4.3g per teaspoon serving!
So, that’s it for the new supplements we’re taking. Two interesting and not entirely unexpected side effects of these changes have happened, for me. I am losing weight. Not incredibly rapid, but it seems 1-2lbs this week. Last night, the scale read 148.8. The day before it was 149.2 and it’s stayed around those numbers all week. This is a result of the extra protein, which is normal. With the added fiber and protein, I do go to the bathroom about twice a day. This is also normal. Neither of these two side effects are something to complain about, at least not for me!
Next week, I’ll share about some of our food habit changes.
