Being that we’re such a natural family and I love DIY, I figured it would be nice to make my sister something for her birthday. I know she wouldn’t have really wanted (or even asked) for anything specific, but I still wanted to do something nice. Knowing that she works long hours, plus has a family of her own and a house to take care of, I also know she doesn’t do much just for herself. Plus, I know she would probably prefer not to spend much on just herself, so keeping all these things in mind, I decided I’d make her some soothing, natural, invigorating, and nutrient-rich bath salts.
Knowing they’d be simple to make and I likely had all the ingredients already, I wondered about packaging. That is, of course, until Hun says, “you have all those jars.” He’s such a genius!
A little on the ingredients and why I used them.
Epsom Salt – rich in magnesium, an important nutrient/mineral we don’t get enough of. Magnesium helps to soothe, help with energy levels, and aids in detoxifying the body.
Baking soda – washes away oils and helps to neutralize acids on the skin, while also providing relief for any skin rashes. Plus, it also can help in detoxifying the body as well.
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt – full of minerals that the body needs and can be absorbed when combined with warm water.
Peppermint Essential Oil – It’s cooling to the skin, while also being calming. Not quite as calming as lavender for instance, but has certainly been studied to show calming of a headache or body pains and increasing blood circulation. (Be very careful when using around young children and babies as it can be highly dangerous for them.)
Sweet Orange Essential Oil – Although having many benefits, as do all essential oils, orange has an invigorating scent and has been proven to aid in the reduction of stress, depression, and even anxiety. Additionally, orange essential oil has properties which can aid in digestion as well.
Peppermint & Sweet Orange Bath Salts
2 cups Epsom Salts
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup Himalayan Sea Salt (substitute for Dead Sea Salt or Celtic Sea Salt)
10 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil
10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
1. Mix the epsom salt, baking soda, and Himalayan Sea Salt together in a glass, ceramic, or metal bowl.
2. Add in the essential oils. Stir.
3. Pour your bath salt into a glass or ceramic container. I wouldn’t use a metal container due to the salts.
Use anywhere from a few tablespoons to 1/4 cup in a bath of warm water. Enjoy!
